Sandra BenitezBiographical NotesDate of birth: 1941Born Sandy Ables. Author. Attended high school and college in Missouri. Winner of the Minnesota Fiction Award and the Barnes and Noble Discover Award for her book A Place Where the Sea Remembers. University of Minnesota Keller-Eisenstein Distinguished Writer in Residence, winter quarter, 1997. In 1979 Sandy Ables left her job of translating management training manuals and signed up for an extension school course in creative writing. About three years later she had written a book-length murder mystery, but the novel got a harsh reception and was never published. She decided to get back to her roots, changed her name to Sandra, and adopted her mother's maiden name, Benitez. She found success as a writer of Latino fiction.
