Biographical Notes

Date of birth: November 1, 1923, Edmonton, Canada

Gordon Rupert Dickson. Author. Moved from Canada to the United States with his mother in 1936 after the death of his father, and to Minnesota in 1937. B.A., creative writing, University of Minnesota, 1948; graduate study, 1948-50. Studied with Sinclair Lewis, Robert Penn Warren, and Poul Anderson, among others. Served in the army during World War II. Supporter of the space program; attended most of the Apollo launches. Wrote novels and short stories, chiefly science fiction and fantasy. Best known for the Childe Cycle novels. Hugo Award for novella, 1965 (Soldier, Ask Not); novella, 1981 (Lost Dorsai); and novelette, 1981 (The Cloak and the Staff), World Science Fiction Convention. Nebula Award for best novelette, 1966 (Call Him Lord), Science Fiction Writers of America. August Derleth Award for best fantasy novel, 1976 (The Dragon and the George), British Fantasy Association. E. E. Smith Memorial Award for imaginative fiction, 1975. Jupiter Award, 1977, for novelette section ("Time Storm"), Instructors of Science Fiction in Higher Education. President of the Science Fiction Writers of America, 1969-71.
