Grace Lee Nute. Historian. B.A., American literature, Smith College, 1917; M.A., Radcliffe College, 1918; Ph.D., American history, Harvard University, 1921. Moved to Minnesota in 1921. Curator of manuscripts, Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, 1921-46; research associate, 1946-57; professor of Minnesota history, Hamline University, 1927-60; conducted study course for business women, 1930-34; lecturer on Minnesota history, University of Minnesota Extension Division, 1948-52; visiting professor, Macalester College, 1956-59; director, James J. Hill papers project, Hill Reference Library, St. Paul, 1960-66. Pioneered in acquisition of microfilm and photocopies of manuscripts; wrote manuals on preservation and organization of collections; wrote books and articles on fur trade and exploration in Minnesota, including The Voyageur (1931) and Caesars of the Wilderness (1943). Editorial board, The Naturalist, Natural History Society of Minnesota magazine, St. Paul, 1957 on. Consultant for Encyclopedia Britannica film Robert Cavalier, Sieur de la Salle (1950). Chairman of the Clarence W. Alvord Memorial commission, Mississippi Valley Historical Association, 1940-56. Guggenheim Fellowship in Europe, 1934-35; Honorary Litt.D., Hamline University, 1943; Ford Foundation grant, 1945; Award of Merit, Western History Association, 1981.
