Curator of manuscripts, Minnesota Historical Society, St. Paul, 1921-46; research associate, 1946-57; professor of Minnesota history, Hamline University, 1927-60; conducted study course for business women, 1930-34; lecturer on Minnesota history, University of Minnesota Extension Division, 1948-52; visiting professor, Macalester College, 1956-59; director, James J. Hill papers project, Hill Reference Library, St. Paul, 1960-66. Pioneered in acquisition of microfilm and photocopies of manuscripts; wrote manuals on preservation and organization of collections; wrote books and articles on fur trade and exploration in Minnesota, including The Voyageur (1931) and Caesars of the Wilderness (1943).
