Date of birth: October 26, 1895, Hobart, Indiana
Date of death: February 5, 1982, Osceola, Wisconsin

Calvin Rutstrum. Author and conservationist. Arrived with parents in St. Paul in 1898. Worked as a cowboy in Montana in the early 1900s. Medical corpsman in the Marine Corps. Sold real estate and automobiles in Minneapolis in the early 1920s. Worked as a detective to investigate bank robberies for the American Banking Association, circa 1925-40. After World War II wrote articles for Twin Cities newspapers; at the same time was director of wilderness camping at Lake Hubert Camps. Freelance writer and conservationist in Marine on St. Croix, circa 1940-82. Columnist for Osceola Sun (Wis.) from late 1970s to 1981. Author of fifteen books on wilderness camping, nature, and canoeing. With Sigurd F. Olson and other conservationists, successfully campaigned to restrict airplane travel across the Boundary Waters Canoe Area in northern Minnesota in the 1940s.
